About
Fledgling is a free, worldwide bird identification trainer. It runs photo, audio, and mixed multiple-choice quizzes, with spaced-repetition review for signed-in users and side-by-side “explain the miss” comparison screens that show what set the two birds apart. No ads, no social feed.
How it works
Pick a region, by GPS, by searching a place, or by browsing countries and states. Fledgling pulls the list of birds actually recorded there from eBird, then quizzes you on those species using real photos and recordings. You can focus on a single family, or use the common backyard birds preset to drill the garden and park species near you.
Every answer feeds a spaced-repetition schedule (FSRS) when you are signed in, so birds you find hard come back more often and the ones you know fade into the background. The goal is simple: get better at naming the birds around you, by sight and by sound, one short session at a time.
This app is free and educational. It uses the eBird API, xeno-canto API, and iNaturalist API under their respective non-commercial educational-use terms. Cornell Lab's Macaulay Library and Merlin are not used. If you'd like to support the underlying data, please contribute observations to eBird, audio to xeno-canto, and photos to iNaturalist.
